SAN FRANCISCO (July 19, 2012) - The American Hospital
Association’s (AHA) Board of Trustees has elected James H. Hinton, president
and CEO of Presbyterian Healthcare Services in Albuquerque, N.M., as its
chair-elect designate. Hinton will assume the chairmanship in 2014, becoming
the top elected official of the national organization that represents America’s
hospitals and health systems.
Hinton has been with Presbyterian Healthcare Services since
January 1983 and has served as president and CEO since July 1995. As CEO,
Hinton leads an organization committed to transforming health care with a century-long
purpose of improving the health of New Mexicans. In December 2011, Presbyterian
was named as one of 32 Pioneer Accountable Care Organizations in the country.
Presbyterian has also partnered with The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine to
develop its innovative Hospital at Home program in which doctors, nurses and
technicians travel to patient homes to provide hospital-level care. Only a
handful of hospitals in the nation offer this service.
“This is time of great change and opportunity in health
care,” said Hinton. “I’m looking forward to serving in this role at such an
important time in the hospital field.”
Hinton has served on multiple health care policy and
advisory boards to the State of New Mexico and serves as a member of the
Presbyterian Healthcare Services Board of Directors and as chair of the
Presbyterian Health Plan Board of Directors. He has been recognized both in New
Mexico and nationally for his exceptional leadership. Hinton currently serves
as the Chair of the Healthcare Institute, is on the Board of Trustees of the
American Hospital Association and the Board of Directors for Premier, Inc.
Hinton received his bachelor’s degree in economics in 1981
from the University of New Mexico and a master’s degree in health care
administration from Arizona State University in 1983.
Presbyterian Healthcare Services is New Mexico’s only
not-for-profit healthcare system. Presbyterian’s integrated delivery system
includes eight hospitals, a statewide health plan, and a growing
multi-specialty medical group. Presbyterian is the second largest private
employer in New Mexico with more than 9,000 employees.
